Our Human Capital Development plan is underpinned by improvements in healthcare and education, and to achieve this, the Government undertook a comprehensive renovation of 13 secondary care facilities in the State, as well as over 100 primary healthcare centres. In addition to this, the Government has invested in tertiary care improvements, and also focused on improving the training and welfare of healthcare workers. The results of our investments over the years are starting to show results. We halved neonatal, infant, and under-5 mortality rates; reduced teenage pregnancy by 36%; decreased unmet needs for family planning by 30%; and increased facility deliveries by 14%. In effect, we have surpassed every single target we laid out at the inception of the administration.
We also continue to invest significantly in education, and the result of this is that the percentage of Ekiti State children that are out of school remains one of the lowest nationally, while our literacy rate is firmly above 90%. We have invested in recruitment and employed over 2,000 teaching and non-teaching staff to improve the student/teacher ratio in the State.
We continue to renovate our schools, with the knowledge that a safe and hospitable environment is a non-negotiable requirement for education to thrive. We are also focused on digitising the learning experience, to prepare Ekiti students for a technology-first world they are likely to operate in. Finally, under this government, two new private universities commenced operations in the State.
